The Components Behind Your New Smile
Here are some words you might hear around the office - and what they mean!
Adhesive or Glue
The adhesive or glue that attaches brackets to your teeth is a specialized orthodontic cement that is applied to the teeth in a very specific way by our skilled clinicians. This allows for a strong bond of your appliances to your teeth, but also allows those appliances to be removed painlessly when treatment is complete.
Brackets
Brackets are those little square things we glue to teeth, securely holding the wire in position. Made from high quality metals or ceramics, these brackets are each designed slightly differently depending on the size/shape and position of the tooth on which they will be placed.
Our team is highly trained on both how to place brackets on teeth and how to place wires into brackets.
Elastics
Elastics play a pivotal role in bite adjustment if recommended by Dr. Peppers. These rubber bands are often placed on upper and lower bracket hooks in a very specific way, enhancing your bite's harmony.
Our team will teach you exactly how and when to do this and will provide the elastics you need - please don't use any elastics other than the ones we provide!
Archwires
The archwire is a delicate metal strip, that connects brackets, gently guiding your teeth toward their perfect positions.
While typically spanning your upper or lower teeth, occasionally linking only specific teeth can optimize personalized treatment outcomes. Count on our orthodontists to make these informed decisions tailored to your journey.
Spacers
Tiny elastic circles, aptly known as spacers, may be employed by Dr. Peppers to create strategic spaces between your teeth. Frequently used before band placement, if necessary, spacers are just one of the tools we utilize to achieve your ideal smile alignment.
Bands
Thin stainless steel rings, known as "bands", sometimes need to be placed around back teeth and secured with orthodontic glue. These bands very serve specific purposes, such as accommodating orthodontic appliances like expanders, or helping to move teeth that cannot be bonded with brackets.
Color Ties
Elastic ties, also referred to as o-rings or ligature ties or simply "color ties", hold your wire in your brackets. Available in a variety of vibrant and subtle colors - from neons to pearl and silver - and often changed out at each regular visits, these ties offer a touch of fun and personal style to your orthodontic journey!
The Magic Behind Your Braces
Braces and wires work by gently and consistently putting pressure on your teeth. This pressure slowly but surely guides your teeth into their optimal positions.
The archwire is connected to each bracket using elastic ties, ensuring the wire remains securely in place. As teeth gradually shift, Dr. Peppers may recommend changes to your wire type or your elastics.
Caring for Your Braces
Proper care of your metal braces is crucial to maintain their condition and prevent damage. Regular brushing and flossing are essential to keep your braces and teeth clean and healthy!
We recommend you steer clear of hard and sticky foods while in braces. Hard and sticky foods can damage your braces, which can cause teeth to move in ways we don't want, and can prolong your treatment time.
Your Braces "Adjustment" Appointments
Your journey with Northern Arizona Orthodontics includes regular visits. usually at least every 8 weeks while in braces. During these appointments, Dr. Peppers will check to make sure things are progressing well with your orthodontic plan, and will discuss any adjustments or changes that need to be made. Braces are also often "tightened" at these appointments, which means your wires and/or color ties are changed based on Dr. Peppers' assessment of your progress.
